Ellis Bird Farm: Purple Martin and Mountain Bluebird Geolocator Research and Education

Ellis Bird Farm was able to purchase 12 geolocator units thanks to the TD Friends of the Environment grant. These units were attached to 6 Purple Martins and 6 Mountain Bluebirds over the summer. The deployment on bluebirds made science history, as they had never been used on bluebirds before. They were able to retrieve a total of 8 geolocators from returned Purple Martins which provided scientists with important insights into migration patterns and routes as well as overwintering habits of these northern nesting martins. Ellis Bird Farm also made interpretive displays about the project, with used geo units on display for people to look at as well as large posters displayed so they can get a good idea of these birds’ exact journeys, including rest stops, and areas where they molt.
