B.C.’s Sharing Farm a hive of activity
For more than 10 years, the Sharing Farm has been growing food to help provide meals for families in need that are living in Richmond, B.C. Now, with funding from TD FEF, the Sharing Farm has doubled the size of its apiary – from 11 to 23 hives – and doubled the volume of nutritious, tasty honey.
The program is now producing a thriving and hardy special population of bees, which not only produce honey but also play a vital role in plant pollination (see “Pollinator Power” to learn more about the importance of pollination). As well, events at the farm help beekeepers share knowledge, make connections and gain expertise while students learn about sustainable beekeeping methods.
“Many serious difficulties will remain for honeybees, but this project is a step in an important direction,” says Leslie Williams, Sharing Farm beekeeper. “My connections and discussions with many other local beekeepers allow me to give and gain insights about how beekeepers can attempt to meet these highly demanding challenges, and help the honey bee to thrive again.”
