A paved Toronto schoolyard gets a green makeover
A barren asphalt surface is not the most inviting schoolyard – or wildlife habitat. With funding from TD FEF, Toronto’s Perth Avenue Junior Public School recently transformed its paved lot into a vibrant outdoor classroom and pollinator garden with five new trees.
The new hands-on learning environment will increase the native plants and pollinators in this urban area and help students learn first-hand about the importance of pollinating birds, butterflies and bees and their role in the production of our food (see feature article).
“We are all excited to welcome the native blooms and the insects that will accompany them to the schoolyard next spring,” says Allison White Gryspeerdt, Perth School Advisory Council. “The pollinator patch will be a benefit to Perth PS and the local community for years to come.”
